Nokia N97 vs Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1

When you are planning an investment in something costly like a high end cell phone, it definitely makes sense for you to look around and then make a decision. After all today there are so many advantages, in what you can compare and how you can look over the internet or talk to your friends and then make the final choice. If you do this, you can ensure that you don’t regret your choice at a later point in time and also you would know what is in store for you in your phone. If you know what you are buying then you are sure to be happy.

There are two main contenders in the fray today – the Nokia N97, and the Sony Xperia X1. While these are both very good phones, the N97, seems to somewhere have the edge over the Xperia. It is indeed a tough choice, but like we said, the N97 is the clear choice – take the camera feature, the memory or any other feature – there is hardly anything that N97 does not boast of in comparison with the Xperia. While we can go on and on, let’s just focus on a few major points that will help you pull the curtain on the Xperia and go ahead with your choice of the N97.

The camera on the N97 just beats its whole class of contenders. If you ask me why, nobody gives you a five mega pixel camera on such a good phone for this kind of cost. Look at our friend the Xperia, the cost is much higher and the feature is much lesser – so it is pretty much like you are in an altogether loss situation. You pay more to get less. With the N97 camera phone, you can click away to glory all the pictures that you’ve been dreaming of all along. It’s that easy.

If you are somebody who is fond of storing music or photos, then the N97 again beats the competition by a clear mile. While the Xperia gives you a humble four hundred mega bytes, the N97 talks of a base of thirty two GB that can be extended to about sixteen GB – seeing these figures, we are sure you know what a sea of difference this is – the storage freak that you are! So, again getting back to our point, you’ll pay more to store less or pay less to store more – so again your choice is our very own N97!

The cost factor is one major point that gives the N97 the edge over most of the mobiles of its genre and cadre. Nokia has gone all the way to prove their point again – they can give you better results for modest prices unlike their rivals – Sony Ericson to be very precise. Though both these phones came into the market after the iphone, the N97 has already started showing signs that it is here to stay for a long time in the field of mobile phones.

How about the touchscreen and screen resolution pixels? I think in both of these Sony XPERIA takes an edge over Nokia N97.

After owning both the Xperia and the N97, I can confidently say that the N97 beats the X1 hands down.
The X1 is very fiddly and has the poor windows mobile interface. The touch screen is inferior to the N97. On the x1 you can see the screen flex. X1 may have the resolution but video playback is very poor (Full screen) not very smooth - even with the James Bond pre loaded trailer. Playback of recorded videos is painfully jerky. And what’s the point in boasting about the screen res when the camera can’t take pictures that are decent and video won’t play properly on it. The zoom is also no existent on the X1.
I found the build quality terrible on the Sony, I think this was due to it being made by HTC.
Within 4 weeks the paint has started to rub off of the battery cover. I was also a victim of the cracked case which loads of people are experiencing. The x1 gets very hot - to the point where it gets uncomfortable making a call. The volume button stopped working, one of the softkeys stopped working, meaning I couldn’t wipe the device.
Paint rubbed off of the Xperia keyboard. I only have the phone 9 months - Sonys poor customer service didn’t impress me either. I gave the phone away.
    The n97 possesses:

    Better build quality
    Smooth video playback
Smooth playback of recorded content from 5mp camera.
    Accelerometer
    Digital Compass
Ear proximity sensor (When you move the phone away from your ear the screen light enables to see call time).
    Widgets (Better concept that panels)
    Better interface than Xperia.
The 32GB of ram + 16GB micro SD
Stereo Speakers (Better quality than the x1 although not as good as the n95)
Larger keyboard (Far easier to type on than the x1)
Decent Text to speech - which reads out messages (You can also hear it unlike MS voice commander on the X1 which has to be purchased properly).
Decent Bluetooth support. (Control of media player not possible on x1 via Bluetooth)
Decent Voice recognition (X1 lacks – TO get it you have to buy MS Voice commander wich doesn’t work properly)
    Quicker than the x1
Battery life is much better than x1.
Making a phone call is far easier.
The screen doesn’t have a thick raised frame around it like the x1.
No panels on the n97 (What a relief - Panels served no point whatsoever, apart from a poor attempt to disguise the crap WM interface). This hasn’t changed much since pocket pc.
A broad range of innovative apps that are useful and a lot of them are free.

If I hear people say the words Xperia and power user in the same sentence - I just laugh.
I will never ever own another Sony mobile again.

with all your respect Ian, I believe you just made a good bed time story and you don’t own both devices. Please just grow up. I agree with kleber. Don’t you get it guys? It’s not about the features of the phone, its about quality and reliability. I keep saying this on and on but people are not smart enough to understand. Although nokia phones give us the best features, they also give us the worst quality! It’s like owning a very fast car with good looks. However, when it comes to handling and good quality its terrible. Therefore, I would go with a sony ericsson on a nokia any day any time! Sorry if you don’t like what I say, but you can some homework considering this matter and I’m sure you will understand where I am coming from.

Sony is still the best, Why? Because price remains while Nokia’s price gets cheaper and cheaper until you are already left behind. I think thats one thing you should know as a user.

I think you guys dont know that N97 has 128MB RAM, 434 MHz processor while Xperia X1 has 256 RAM, 528 MHz and 256 MHz 2 core processor with 3D graphics accelerator from ATI.
    Who wins in performance?

I think both phones are quite good, at the moment I have the N95 and am thinking which one to take and most probably it will be the x1… I’m sick of this symbian because it’s so limited it totally embarrassed me - you get word, excel and power point but that was it. And some lousy games but that’s not what I’m looking for. Emails are slow and ugly compared to mobile outlook, battery has to be recharged every day no matter what you do and the GPS takes 5 mins untill it finds my position. I have the feeling if I go for the N97 I will be disappointed again, and recently I tried Windows Mobile 6 on another device and it was a lot more user-friendlier. Another thing about the Nokia N-series is the wifi - the receiver is so slow and doesn’t connect to a network which isn’t in a couple of meters from me…. I have a HP iPAQ rx1950 which is a year older and does a lot better than the n95. And about the pictures - I don’t believe even one of us prints them, they’re only in the phone, so for me there ain’t such a big difference between 3.2 and 5 mega pixel.
